PMAY selects beneficiaries through verified survey data rather than open applications, so eligibility is decided by clear inclusion and exclusion rules. This guide explains who qualifies for PMAY-Gramin and PMAY-Urban, the automatic exclusions, and how to confirm whether your household is on the list.
PMAY-Gramin eligibility
- Household is houseless or lives in a house with kutcha walls and kutcha roof (0, 1 or 2 rooms)
- Household appears in the SECC 2011 / Awaas+ survey data verified by the gram sabha
- Priority groups: SC/ST households, minorities, widows, persons with disabilities, freed bonded labourers, families of martyred defence/paramilitary personnel
Automatic exclusions (rural)
- Owns a pucca house anywhere
- Owns a motorised two/three/four-wheeler or mechanised farm equipment
- Any family member is a government employee or earns more than ₹10,000 per month
- Pays income tax or professional tax
- Has a Kisan Credit Card with a limit of ₹50,000 or more
- Owns 2.5+ acres of irrigated land or 5+ acres of unirrigated land (with other conditions)
PMAY-Urban eligibility
| Category | Annual household income |
| EWS | Up to ₹3 lakh |
| LIG | ₹3 – 6 lakh |
| MIG | ₹6 – 9 lakh (component-dependent) |
- The family (husband, wife, unmarried children) must not own a pucca house anywhere in India
- The city/town must be covered under the mission
- A female member’s name on the house title is encouraged — mandatory for several components
Check the Awaas+ list at your gram panchayat or the beneficiary search on the portal.
How to confirm you are on the list
- Rural: ask at your gram panchayat whether your household is in the Awaas+ permanent waitlist, or search pmayg.nic.in → Stakeholders → IAY/PMAYG Beneficiary
- Urban: check your assessment status on the PMAY-U portal or with your Urban Local Body
- If you qualify but were missed, request inclusion through the ongoing Awaas+ survey window (rural) or the next urban demand survey
Frequently asked questions
I own a plot but no house. Am I eligible?
Yes — plot owners without a pucca house can qualify (rural construction assistance, or urban beneficiary-led construction for EWS).
Can a married son living separately apply?
Only if he is recorded as a separate household in the survey data with his own ration card/household entry and meets all criteria.
Does owning a bike disqualify a rural family?
Yes — owning a motorised two-wheeler is an automatic exclusion under PMAY-G rules, even if the family is otherwise poor.
