National Scholarship Portal (NSP) — How to Apply, Documents & Why Applications Get Rejected

Almost every central and state scholarship — pre-matric, post-matric, merit-cum-means, minority and disability scholarships — is applied for through one website: the National Scholarship Portal (scholarships.gov.in). One registration covers dozens of schemes. Here is how to apply correctly and avoid the mistakes that get applications rejected every year.

How NSP works

  • One-time registration creates your OTR (One-Time Registration) number with Aadhaar-based e-KYC
  • Eligible schemes appear automatically based on your class, category, income and state
  • Applications are verified at two levels — your institute, then the state/ministry
  • Money comes by DBT to your Aadhaar-seeded bank account

How to apply — step by step

  1. Register on scholarships.gov.in (OTR) with Aadhaar and your mobile number
  2. Log in and complete your profile — academic details, category, family income
  3. Choose the scholarship scheme shown for your profile and fill the application
  4. Upload documents: income certificate, caste certificate (if applicable), previous marksheet, fee receipt, bank passbook
  5. Submit before the deadline and get it verified by your school/college — unverified applications lapse
  6. Track status in your NSP dashboard till DBT payment

Registration and application are completely free.

Frequently asked questions

When does the NSP window open?

Typically July–October for most schemes each academic year, with state variations. Check scholarships.gov.in for current dates and never rely on unofficial “last date” posts.

Are there scholarships outside NSP?

Yes — some states run their own portals (e.g., Maharashtra mahadbt, Karnataka SSP), plus private/CSR scholarships via portals like Buddy4Study. Always cross-check authenticity before sharing documents.

Does anyone charge for NSP application?

No — NSP is free. CSC centres may charge a nominal assisted-filing fee, but no one can “guarantee” a scholarship.
