PMKVY Eligibility 2026 — Age, Education & Who Can Join

PMKVY is deliberately open — the mission is to skill youth who are out of school or college and not yet in stable work. There is no course fee, no entrance exam, and minimal paperwork. But each job role has its own entry criteria, so here is how eligibility actually works.

Basic eligibility

  • Indian national with a valid Aadhaar
  • Broad target group: youth roughly 15–45 years (job-role specific ranges apply)
  • School/college dropouts and unemployed youth are the priority audience
  • An Aadhaar-linked bank account for any support payouts

Course-level criteria

Each NSQF job role defines its own minimum education and age — for example, some healthcare roles need 10th/12th pass, while many construction, retail or apparel roles accept 5th–8th pass or below. The course page on Skill India Digital lists the exact requirement before you apply.

Course typeTypical entry requirement
Retail, apparel, construction basicsOften 5th–8th pass or no formal requirement
Electronics, automotive, logisticsUsually 8th–10th pass
Healthcare, IT-ITES, BFSI rolesUsually 10th–12th pass
RPL certificationExisting work experience in the trade — education flexible

Who should choose which track

  • Short-Term Training (STT): fresh candidates wanting a new trade with placement support
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): workers already skilled on the job who need a certificate for better wages or contracts
  • Special projects: tailored batches for vulnerable groups, tribal areas and specific industries

Each course lists its exact education and age requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Can graduates join PMKVY?

Yes — graduates are not barred, though the scheme prioritises dropouts and unemployed youth. Higher-level NSQF courses suit graduates better.

Can someone already employed join?

RPL is designed exactly for employed/experienced workers. For full-time STT batches, you need to attend classes and meet biometric attendance norms.

Is there any fee at any point?

No fee for training, assessment or certification under PMKVY. If a centre demands money for a “PMKVY seat”, report it on the Skill India helpline 8800055555.

Can women join? Are there women-only centres?

Yes — women are a priority group and many centres run women-only batches with flexible timings.
